An interview with the grower, Barry Lubin.

By John Hockberger

Barry, you had the honor of winning Plant of the Month for two different plants in February, 2024.  What was the second?

Barry — Ludisia discolor.  It is a species and one of the so called “Jewel Orchids”. The Jewel Orchids are grown primarily for their striking foliage, not the flowers.

Where and when did you purchase it?

Barry — I have had this plant for a very long time – probably more than 15 years.  I don’t remember where I got it.

What are your growing conditions?

Barry — I grow this plant differently from any other plant I have ever owned.  It grows on the surface of a plastic lid from a tupperware bin with no media!  It does not have extensive roots – it seems to absorb water through the rhizome. I need to water it more than other plants.  The book says this is a low-light plant, but it grows in one of the brightest spots in my greenhouse.  I guess the plant can’t read!

What is its bloom cycle?

Barry — It blooms once a year, starting in November.  The flowers last 3 – 4 months.

Would you say this plant is easy to grow, intermediate or more difficult?

Barry— It is easy to grow.  It tolerates wide variations in light, temperature and watering.

Anything else that an orchid grower/enthusiast might like to know about this plant?

Barry — There are many different Jewel orchids.  It is a fun group of orchid to explore.
